Measure the space you can use
Start with the spot where the sofa will sit. Measure the usable width and depth from the point where the back of the sofa can actually rest. Account for anything that sticks out or needs to stay accessible, such as trim, a vent, or an outlet you use. Check the height if the sofa will sit under a window or shelf.
Use the full dimensions of the sofa
Find the overall width, depth, and height for the exact configuration you want. A seat-depth measurement leaves out the back of the sofa. For a chaise, use the full depth on the side where the chaise extends. For a sleeper or recliner, check how much space it needs when open.
Try the footprint on the floor
Mark the outside corners with paper. If you use tape, check that it is suitable for your floor. Walk your usual path around the marked space. Open nearby doors and drawers and check the space beside the coffee table. Move the outline now if it gets in your way.
Try the numbers for a 90-inch-wide spot
IKEA lists the standard MORABO sofa at 81⅛ inches wide and 36¼ inches deep in its U.S. buying guide. In an example space 90 inches wide and 58 inches deep, that leaves 8⅞ inches of width in total and 21¾ inches of depth in front if the sofa sits at the back of the measured area. Those are leftover dimensions. Walk the space and check what needs to open before deciding whether they work for you.
Check delivery separately
The floor outline tells you how the sofa sits in the room. Check the seller’s delivery dimensions against the clear openings, stairs, and turns on the way in. If a turn is tight or the seller lists only assembled dimensions, send the seller your measurements before you order.
