Pick one routine

Choose a task you do often, such as setting out breakfast. Pull out the bowls, mugs and plates you use for it. Leave the rest of the kitchen alone for now. IKEA’s cabinet guide suggests grouping items by task. Use that idea to decide which pieces belong together in the cabinet you are changing.

Make three groups

Keep everyday pieces where you can reach them comfortably. Move items you rarely use to another shelf if you have room. Set aside pieces that belong elsewhere. Put small loose items together in a clean container you already have, as long as you can see what is in it and take it out easily.

Check what the shelf really holds

Measure the clear width and depth, then check for hinges or trim that narrow the opening. Leave enough room above a stack to lift the top dish out. Close the cabinet gently and make sure the door clears the dishes and containers. If you have to move a stack each time you want a mug, swap the two groups or make a shorter stack.

Try the setup at the next meal

Take out what you need and put it back after washing up. Notice which pieces make you reach around something else. Move those pieces first. If you still want an organizer, measure the spot it would fill and write down the problem you want it to solve.
